Today marks the 37-year anniversary of The Thrilla in Manilla, the historic rubber match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. The fight, which took place at the 16,500-seat Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, was won by Ali via 14th round TKO. As this photo shows, Frazier’s left eye was swollen shut and left him unable to defend himself, forcing trainer Eddie Futch to throw in the towel before the final round. (Neil Leifer/SI)

Arthur Ashe acknowledges the crowd after defeating Jimmy Connors in four sets at the 1975 Wimbledon finals. Ashe, 35, was the underdog against 22-year-old Connors but kept the youngster off guard with a mix of pace and angles. The victory was Ashe’s first Wimbledon title and third Grand Slam overall. On this day in 1975, Red Sox catcher Carton Fisk hit one of the most dramatic home runs in baseball history. In the bottom of the 12th inning of Game 6 of the World Series, Fisk hit a long drive that appeared to be heading to foul territory. As he ran to first base, the catcher jumped and waved at the ball to remain fair. The ball obliged, hitting the foul pole and giving the Red Sox a memorable win. Unfortunately for Boston fans, the Reds went onto win the Series, four games to three. (AP)
